The Pilot is a tentative love song which doubles as a metaphorical story. The song describes beginning a new journey of love as though it were a pilot trying to land a plane successfully. In the beginning of the song, and throughout the verses, yet another pass at trying to land safely ensues, each time considering different obstacles that hinder both the pilot and the love connection from landing safely. This song is about the tentative nature of starting relationships after you have been hurt, and the worries that go along with new relationships. The visual nature of this song was deliberately intended to exist in two worlds, the world of the pilot, and the world of love. The pilot was chosen specifically as both a character and a play on words as to the pilot referring to the pilot episode of something new and how that reflects how new relationships resemble a new pilot episode or fresh start. The chorus refers to this meaning of "The Pilot" - Is this the pilot episode... is this the test run? So there you go. Now you know. :)
